Beneficial Microbes

What the heck is a probiotic, anyway?

While you can find a more scientific definition*, we like to think of probiotics as magical microbes, or teeny, weeny wonders. These teeny, weeny wonders, are friendly bacteria and live in all sorts of environments. They offer benefits to the world they inhabit, because they can outwit the bad bacteria they often encounter.

The term probiotic is most commonly attached to the friendly bacteria residing in the intestinal tract of people. In this situation, probiotics work to restore balance to a system gone bad. When bad bacteria take over, symptoms like diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and peptic ulcer diseases may erupt. Bad bacteria can take over for any number of reasons - including sustained use of antibiotics, eating or drinking foods and liquids your system is not use to (think of traveling), or ingesting contaminated foods (think salmonella and e-coli).

Now, take this same concept and apply the benefits of teeny, weeny wonders (probiotics) to all the places that bad bacteria may flourish: your kitchen floors and counter tops, your compost pile, your lawn or garden, your fish pond and aquarium, your pet beds and kitty litter boxes. Bad bacteria are everywhere. So what’s a person to do?
